my interview with BRAIDS' leading lady Raphaelle Standell-Preston is up on Bullett Magazine today.
our conversation was actually way longer and more spirited than you can tell from this final edit. I would love to publish the unabridged version sometime. it was really a sweet conversation between girls, nerding out about Portishead and Atoms For Peace and cheeseburgers and how smart animals are and how shitty it is to be navigating our early twenties.
maybe I should start a podcast.
I should also probably note that I did this interview in late August, the week before Flourish // Perish came out, and it was meant to come out (on another major music site) along with their album release but for a lot of shitty reasons its publication was delayed for this long. this is perhaps one of the most frustrating experiences I have had as a music journalist: you get an assignment you’re happy about, carry it out and get it done on time, and from there all these powers at work outside of your control mess up so badly and for such a long time that it siphons the initial joy and satisfaction of the work right out of you. to my detriment, I am passionate about what I do and I tend to internalize any shortcomings or failings when it comes to my work, even if those negative factors have little to nothing to do with me. really, the lack of professionalism I’ve experienced in this industry since coming to new york city has been nothing short of astounding. I expected better, I guess.
I have a number of other stories that have yet to be published due to the same circumstances, some of which I did on assignment at this year’s Pop Montreal festival. hopefully they will all see the light of day at long last. I am tempted at this point to just post the audio files of the interview recordings so anyone interested can hear the whole story from each of these artists I was proud to sit down with, without anyone else’s failings standing in my way. but, I don’t know yet. stay tuned.
